From the Richmond Whig, 6/2/1864, p. 2, c. 6
A GRIEVANCE ABATED. - Since
the reoccupation of the tobacco factories on Main and Franklin streets near
Church Hill, as hospitals for Yankee wounded, the sentinels posted around them
have renewed the former unwarrantable practice of requiring citizens, including
ladies, to leave the paved sidewalks and walk on the curbing, or in the gutter,
whilst passing the hospitals. We are pleased to have it in our power to state
that the attention of Major Turner, Commandant at the Libby, was called to this
grievance yesterday, and that he has given such instructions as will prevent its
recurrence. The practice of the guard complained of was in violation of positive
orders heretofore issued by this efficient officer, who has supervisory charge
of the prison hospitals.
