From the Richmond Whig, 6/18/1864, p. 1, c. 3
THAT’S THE WAY THE MONEY GOES.
- The building on Canal street, near 8th, formerly used as a barracks by the
‘City Battalion,’ is fast becoming a ruin, from neglect. It was leased by the
Government for the term of three years, and is to be surrendered to the owner in
the same condition in which it was when leased. - Since its vacation by the
“City Battalion,” all of the window sashes have been stolen and carried away.
The doors are wide open, and the premises left exposed to further depridations
or to the torch of the incendiary. We had supposed there was an Assistant
Quartermaster in this city, charged with the special duty of looking after
buildings leased by the Government, but it would seem there is no such officer.
