From the Richmond Whig, 5/25/1864, p. 1, c. 3
THE CADETS. - The corps of
Cadets from the Virginia Military Institute, paraded on the Capital Square
yesterday evening, and were reviewed by President Davis. All youthful as they
are, they presented the sturdy appearance of war worn veterans. Their proud
banner rent and torn by the bullets of the bloody field of New Market, fluttered
proudly in the breeze. After the review by the President, the corps was drawn up
in front of the Gubernatorial mansion, and were addressed by Governor Smith, who
welcomed them to the Capital of the State and Country, and complimented them
upon their gallant conduct in their late encounter with the invader in the great
Valley of Virginia.
The Cadets have been assigned
to duty under Brig. Gen. Custis Lee.
