From the Richmond Whig, 6/20/1862, p. 1, c. 1

EPITAPH ON A YANKEE. – A gentleman from the battlefield before Richmond copied the following epitaph, written, and placed over the grave of a dead Yankee by a Mississippian:

The Yankees came down in numerous bands,
To divide our Southern lands,
This narrow and secluded spot,
Is all that this poor Yankee got.

[ed. note: see 7/8/1862 Enquirer for a variant of this poem]
