From the Richmond
Dispatch, 7/2/1863
Committals
at Castle Thunder.
- Among the subjects lodged in Castle Thunder yesterday were Bob Ryan, a
deserter from Capt. Barlow's company, and James Logan, a deserter from the 25th
(city) Virginia Battalion. They were captured by two of the detectives while
walking about the city and taking it coolly. Ryan will be examined by the civil
authorities on a warrant charging him with the felony of stealing some jewelry
from Mr. Tyler's residence. Logan jumped off the cars while on his way to be
court martialed and escaped. It is likely that he will stand his trial this
time. Not
very long since some of the prisoners at the Castle dug a hole entirely through
an alley sixteen feet wide, and were very near escaping. The hole was filled up,
but yesterday Jim Howell, a soldier awaiting court-martial, was found opening it
again, and was pulled out by the heels. He was placed in irons.
