From the South Carolina Historical Magazine, April 1974, p. 113[Diary of William G. Hinson, 7th SC Cav. Entry transcribed mentions possible use of Belle Isle as a CSA hospital.] [10/31/1864] 31st Kept saddled and ready to move. I went to Richmond and visited Col. Haskell. He must possess great vitality. His wound (eye shot out) would have killed almost any other man. He has a strong constitution improved by a pure and temperate life. Also visited Robert Bee who was sick at Belle Island.
